In April, the 45m Feadship GLADIATOR embarked on a voyage across the Atlantic, destined for the Mediterranean. This journey, however, was not just about reaching a destination—it carried a purpose: raising funds for The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). Deckhand Chris Sparkes and his fellow crew committed to completing one exercise rep for every nautical mile sailed, totaling an impressive 4,350 nautical miles.
As GLADIATOR charted her course, the crew diligently performed their reps, navigating the challenges of rough seas. “Our conditions were not ideal with swells coming from different directions,” Chris shared. “Despite this, the crew all managed to complete their 4,500 reps each with several doing even more.”
For Chris, the fundraiser was not just about raising money; it was a way to honor his mother, whom he lost to cancer 18 years ago in March. “This coincided with the challenge and added motivation. I was with her till the end and witnessed the care, support, and everything that was poured into her care. I just wanted to put something together that could benefit those families that are fighting cancer as everyone needs as much help as they can get in some way or form. It has been a part of my healing journey as well,” he reflected. Several of the crew have also had people close to them affected, making the journey that much more inspiring.
The journey also aimed to inspire others to join the crew in a 20-day commitment to movement and positive habits. “Exercise had always been a coping mechanism, my therapist, my outlet. I wanted people to join us to commit to 20 days with us as we sailed across the Atlantic. This commitment was a form of movement, a positive habit, or something they knew in their hearts would add some value to them,” Chris said.
The crew’s dedication paid off, with each member completing their share of the 45,000 reps over 20 days, raising an incredible R113,484 ($6,310). “We are incredibly grateful for all the donations and how much better than expected the challenge went. It is definitely something we would like to do again,” Chris expressed.
The funds raised will go to care homes and support families undergoing cancer treatment in South Africa.
