Northrop & Johnson charter yacht TCB took home top honors at the 2022 Newport Charter Yacht Show in June as Chef Alex took first place in the luxurious comfort-themed chef competition.
The competition tasked the chefs with creating a meal of their choice, either breakfast, lunch or dinner, incorporating ingredients supplied by Chef Competition sponsor Shoreside Support. Furthermore, the chef would have to create an adult version and a child version and incorporate one dietary restriction, including gluten-free, vegan, etc. This added challenge was worth five percent of the overall score. Chefs were then judged on the technical skill and creativity of the four servings they created – one for each judge. Chefs also were asked to present the dish, including an explanation of the preparation, ingredients used as well as knowledge of an experience with the chosen dietary restriction.
Chef Alex’s winning dish was a “high-end surf-and-turf version of taco Tuesday.” About his dish, one of the judges said, “Both dishes were super delicious, looked beautiful, and he was the only entry to use pickled elements (rhubarb and florentino).” The judge also added, “Any charter guest – including the kids – will light up when served this. Chef Alex understood the assignment and he executed it very well.”
In addition to winning critical acclaim for his cooking, the entire crew wow’d during this year’s yacht hop, which was held in memory of Herman Pundt who championed the importance of Broker and Crew interaction. The theme was “Gilded Age,” and the crew pulled out all the stops to showcase their five-star entertainment, décor and theme-night skills.
