As the air begins to chill and the leaves turn their golden hues, owners of vintage and classic cars will turn out en masse to celebrate the halcyon days of high style, high speeds and high jinks during the Audrain Newport Concours & Motor Week.
Joining the line-up of the world’s most prestigious events – the likes of the Goodwood Revival and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance – the Audrain Newport Concours & Motor Week has become a major international concours event on the historic racing circuit, attracting car enthusiasts from around the world. Hosted in Newport, Rhode Island – for many the birthplace of both yachting and automotive racing in America – the fall event celebrates some of the rarest and most astonishing cars ever created.
Having long celebrated being the epicenter of yachting in America, Newport also has been home to many firsts – from the first polo match played in America in 1876, to the first professional tennis match in 1881, the first U.S. Open in 1895, and every America’s Cup race from 1930 to 1983. It is also home to one of the first sanctioned automotive track races in America’s history, which dates back as early as the Gilded Age when Willie K. Vanderbilt II and some of his friends raced their high-priced automobiles at Newport’s Aquidneck Park horse track.
Their races became the must-attend high society event on the circuit with thousands of spectators showing up in formal dress to watch iconic Newport families compete against one another for the famed Vanderbilt Cup. Returning for its second year from September 30 to October 3, Audrain Newport Concours & Motor Week plugs into the coastal town’s rich automotive history and luxury sporting activities. Hosted in Newport, the event is a showcase of New England at its most beautiful, the fall colors and famed Newport Mansions providing a stunning backdrop for some of the greatest cars in the world.
The four-day program includes exhibitions of rare and vintage automobiles, with talks and seminars from experts in the automotive world. Sporting activities including
tennis, golf and sailing along the Newport coast take place each day, while the social scene includes concerts, cocktails, dinners and parties hosted in the grand mansions. The final day brings everything together with the Audrain Newport Concours d’Elegance – a showcase of the rarest automobiles in the world, displayed and judged for a chance to win the coveted best in show, Willie K. Vanderbilt Trophy. The event concludes with a special gala evening in homage to the halcyon days of high style, high speeds and high jinks.
