NORTHROP & JOHNSON HOSTS FIRST ANNUAL CHAI RUM COCKTAIL CONTEST AT FLIBS 2017

Seven luxury superyachts in the Northrop & Johnson display participated in the cocktail contest. On Wednesday, November 1, each yacht was given a bottle of the unique botanical rum. They were tasked with creating a unique concoction that would wow judges. The criteria for the contest included taste, creativity and overall appearance.

On Saturday, November 4, four judges, Kiran Akal and John Fleming from Chai Rum, award-winning Chef Michael Schwartz of Michael’s Genuine Food in Miami and Yachts International Editor-at-Large Jill Bobrow met at the Northrop & Johnson stand at the show to begin the tasting. Each judge sampled the delightful cocktails then scored them on a scale from one to five in every category.

Once all the samples were sipped, the scores were tallied. A winner was announced for each category as well as a highest overall score. Category winners were given a bottle of Chai Rum to enjoy and the highest overall winner was presented with a trophy, a bottle of Chai Rum’s latest cocktail, the Chai Rum Sazerac and a $1,000 gift certificate to Michael Schwartz’s restaurant Michael’s Genuine Food in Miami. Northrop & Johnson will provide a limo service for the crew to go down to the restaurant on the day of their choosing.

The winner in the taste category is motor yacht HEARTBEAT(with assistance from their neighbor motor yacht TUMBLEHOME) for their unique take of the bloody Mary. The Chai Rum bloody Mary was created with homemade bloody Mary juice and dressed with grilled shrimp, blue cheese-stuffed olives and a sprig of celery.

The winner in the creativity category is luxury sailing yacht MITseaAH for the engagement. This drink told the story of Captain Andrew’s proposal to Chief Stewardess Charlotte during their sail to Florida. It featured strawberries, strawberries frozen in ice, prosecco and Chai Rum.

The winner in the overall appearance category is luxury motor yacht FAR NIENTE for their dazzling Roasty Toasty Thai Chai, which included homemade chili-infused syrup, Chai Rum and ginger beer with a toasted marshmallow rim and a garnish of candied ginger with a lit sparkler.

FAR NIENTE also took home top honors for the Thai Chai. They are looking forward to their evening out at Michael’s Genuine Food to celebrate sometime soon.
