130' (39.62) Classic Motor Yacht NORTHWIND Sold

Posted April 4, 2025 in Brokerage & New Build

Northrop & Johnson is proud to announce the sale of the 130′ (39.62m) motor yacht NORTHWIND, with Yacht Salesperson Rolf Smith representing the seller.

Originally launched in 1930 by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co. and designed by the legendary naval architecture firm Cox & Stevens, NORTHWIND is a beautiful example of early 20th-century yacht design. Commissioned by American industrialist Charles Martin Clark Jr., she represents a commitment to quality and craftsmanship that has stood the test of time.

NORTHWIND has a storied past, serving under His Majesty’s Government during World War II. She played a vital role in the evacuation of British troops at Dunkirk and was often moored outside the Houses of Parliament. Following the war, she embarked on a five-year global goodwill tour to promote British exports. Throughout her service, she hosted many dignitaries and world leaders. Recognizing her unique historical value, a Special Act of Congress officially restored her U.S. flag status in 1988.

Between 2017 and 2022, NORTHWIND benefited from a comprehensive refit that preserved her vintage charm while incorporating modern technology. Key upgrades included new navigation equipment, overhauled mechanical and electrical systems, and refined interior details to enhance guest comfort. These enhancements ensure NORTHWIND meets the expectations of today’s owners without compromising her historical character.

The yacht offers accommodations for up to 10 guests in five beautifully appointed staterooms, supported by a professional crew of 10. Her interior features warm wood paneling, classic furnishings, and an ambiance reminiscent of the golden age of yachting. Every detail has been thoughtfully considered to maintain authenticity while delivering luxury.

NORTHWIND is powered by twin Paxman 12-cylinder diesel engines, each producing 360 HP. She reaches a top speed of 12 knots and cruises efficiently at 10 knots. With a fuel capacity of 5,812 gallons, she boasts a transatlantic range of 3,000 nautical miles, making her ideal for long-distance exploration. Her gross tonnage of 195 GT and Lloyd’s Register construction add to her reliability and safety at sea.

Whether envisioned as a private retreat, a charter opportunity, or a collector’s investment in classic yacht heritage, NORTHWIND offers unmatched pedigree and presence.
