The 98-foot (30.08m) motor yacht THEA is a tastefully well-appointed full displacement, twin screw long keel vessel. This “Island Gypsy” was originally built in 1979 in Junk Bay, Hong Kong by Kong & Halvorsen Marine & Engineering Company and Harvey Halvorsen whose family history of boat building can be traced back to 1887 in Norway and from 1924 in Australia.

THEA underwent a remarkable transformation in Thailand from 2012 to 2014. The extensive rebuild included stripping the hull to its frames, lengthening the stern section, and installing new wiring, hoses, fittings, and equipment. In March 2021, THEA was hauled out for a complete repaint (transitioning from navy blue to oyster white), along with varnish and mechanical upgrades. She was relaunched in April 2023 and remained in Malaysia until July 2024 when she was purchased by an experienced superyacht captain who, with his team, has spent the last few months bringing this classic yacht back into full service, whilst also improving her both cosmetically and mechanically.

Stepping through the cockpit’s double timber doors, you enter her expansive, informal lounge that exudes comfort. Solid teak floors and veneer blend with off-white upholstered panels and teak louvre frames, which can be removed for unobstructed views. New sofa upholstery in 2024 has refreshed the space. Moving forward through an elegantly arched bulkhead, you find the dining area featuring an extendable table made from unique Thai timber “Khao Dam.” This area, enhanced by black deckhead panels and LED lighting, accommodates eight guests and opens to the deck for excellent ventilation. A sliding serving hatch connects the dining room to the galley, while a cleverly concealed day head is conveniently located nearby.

The portside galley is a chef’s dream, fully equipped with a commercial gas range, full-height fridge, dishwasher, microwave, and oven. Corian countertops and a double stainless sink, along with a thoughtful waste management system, enhance functionality. Indirect lighting and bright glass panels create a delightful space.

THEA’s wheelhouse with full-beam dash boasts advanced navigational electronics, with steering options via a joystick or an “art deco” hubless wheel. Slimline helm seats are mounted on a custom bracket that allows them to face the dining area, enabling enjoyable dining in the wheelhouse while underway, aided by a dumb waiter from the galley. The viewing sofa offers superb underway views, and sliding side doors lead to the Portuguese bridge, equipped with rudder, engine, and thruster controls, as well as a Raymarine chartplotter.

THEA accommodates eight guests in four staterooms. Her en-suitemaster suite islocated aft, accessible via a private companionway, this cabin features a king-size bed, a flatscreen TV on an electric lifter, and a leather-topped desk. Two additional guest staterooms are located on this deck, one queen and one convertible with a Pullman. Both staterooms have en-suite bathrooms. The yacht also features and upper deck stateroom with a queen bed and a private deck that is shaded by a Bimini and outfitted with lounge chairs. It also could carry a tender.

THEA’s stern was lengthened during the rebuild to include a hydraulic swim platform and a storage garage, with space for a tender. Her cockpit features a fixed bench seat and varnished teak railings. The side decks are safe and easy to navigate, with new stainless-steel handrails and high bulwarks. The foredeck includes storage lockers, a U-shaped bench seat with a dining table that converts to a daybed, and twin Muir anchor windlasses.

Additional features include rainwater harvesting, a separate shower water supply, and a dumb waiter connecting the galley and wheelhouse. THEA is equipped for short-handed operation and easy maintenance, making her perfect for both long voyages and charters.
